KRUDMART *SHOP INTERVIEW* 11/07/08
Recently, we got to chat with Steve Kay, President of Krudmart, a clothing shop in Buffalo NY. Krudmart is one of the few places to get Actual Pain online so we thought it might be good to let you know a little about them and what they do. Founded in 2002, they’ve helped to cultivate a little culture in upstate NY, and in 2009 they plan to revamp the webshop while simultaniously launch their own clothing brand with collabs with some of our favorite artists. Look out world, here comes Krudmart.
ACTUAL PAIN: What kind of people do you see in the shop on a daily basis, do you have diehard regulars? Also does anyone stalk the Krudmart, like crackheads or insane collector people?
STEVE KAY: The store has halfway houses on either side. Basically the government pays half these people’s rent so long as they hold down a job or whatever. The landlord is a really cool guy and actually has most of them just doing maintenance work on the building so they’re always milling about. The one guy has a real attachment to the power washer. He hoses down the sidewalk at least once a week. He even hit my car up one day. Not sure if you’re supposed to power wash a car but fuck it, it’s a lease. Other than that we do have our regulars that are in once a week. We know now to set aside their sizes and let them have first crack. Also our retail manager Erin has quite the gaggle of suitors coming in to try to get her to go on a date on a regular basis.
AP: Besides Actual Pain, what are some of your favorite things that you are selling? Anything new coming that we should be stoked about?
SK: First off, I gotta say I really am psyched on Actual Pain. The unique aesthetic and hand illustrated take on things is really a breath of fresh air from all this streamline vectored sports/rap shit that makes me want to hate two of my favorite things. Aside from that, Fuct has to be my number one favorite brand. I hate to pick favorites but we came up around the same time they were re-launching and it’s been a very symbiotic relationship. It also bears mentioning that Brunetti virtually invented this whole industry. Some other personal favorites are Benny Gold, The Hundreds, Reason (those kids are doing a GREAT job of transforming into a high-end garment brand) and your boy Jason at Flying Coffin.
AP: We listen to a good mix of music here at the AP office, what’s currently on your playlist? Anything spectacular or strange?
SK: Right now I’m listening to the newest Krudmart Mixtape by my friend Jess who dj’s by the name Jubilee. Some how I got really into house and electro in the past year. I blame it on Jed (official human Krudmart mascott). On the flip side of the coin I’ve also recently gotten heavily into late 80’s early 90’s indie rock like Suede, the Sundays and Pulp. Also, fuck what you heard.. Ron Browz is the future.
AP: What do people do in Buffalo to party? I’ve never been there and am planning on partying there at some point in my life so it would be good to know what’s what about Buffalo.
SK: I’ve recently declared myself the King of Buffalo and no one’s really stepped up to challenge me for the crown so I feel fully qualified to field this question. Everyone here is an alcoholic and a lot of people do drugs. It’s just so abysmal. The winters are long. The jobs suck.. there just isn’t much to do. That said, I’m carving out a bit of a niche. I’ve resurrected my DJ career and I can say, all modesty aside, that I throw some sick parties. We just had our 2nd anniversary gala at the store and people were talking about it for weeks. Basically, if you want to have fun in Buffalo, get at me.

PRIEST STABBING!
ROME (Reuters) – A 25-year-old man who tried to kill a priest by stabbing him in a Rome church has told police that he did so after the watching the film “The Da Vinci Code” and believing himself to be the anti-Christ.
The priest, Rev. Caino Calitri, 68, was in critical condition in a Rome hospital after he was stabbed repeatedly in the neck on Tuesday by Marco Luzi, according to Italian media reports, including the Catholic paper Avvenire.
Police found a note in one of Luzi’s pockets reading “this is just the beginning, 666.”
The number 666 is known as “the number of the beast” in the Book of Revelation in the Bible.
Luzi, who stabbed three other people who had tried to help the priest, told police after his arrest that he had watched “The Da Vinci Code” on television the night before.
They also found various references to the novel by Dan Brown in Luzi’s apartment, including a print of the “The Last Supper” fresco by Leonardo Da Vinci.
One note read “I, the anti-Christ.”
The theme of the anti-Christ and Leonardo’s fresco figure prominently in the best-selling book and its film adaptation, both of which have been condemned by the Vatican.
The Da Vinci Code” outraged the Vatican and some Catholics because of its storyline that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had children, creating a royal blood line that Church officials kept secret for centuries.

baggy pant’s can get you arrested in Florida…
“SEPTEMBER 11—Last week we brought word of the arrest of Kenneth Smith, a Florida man busted for wearing baggy pants that exposed his boxer shorts. Well, it turns out that the Riviera Beach cops have been rather diligent in enforcing a new city ordinance targeting droopy shorts and trousers, according to police reports. Since officers began their crackdown last month, they have arrested at least 11 other baggy pants perps (of that group, two are juveniles). Below you’ll find mug shots of eight of the other nine arrestees, aged between 18 and 36. As seen in a series of Riviera Beach Police Department probable cause affidavits, each of the males was nabbed after officers determined that low-slung pants or shorts had resulted in the exposure of between two and five inches of the individual offender’s boxer shorts. While most of the busts occurred without incident, a few of the arrestees appeared bewildered that they were being arrested for a trouser-related offense. One of the juveniles, in fact, cursed out Officer J. Thornton and said, according to one affidavit, “Your a cracker and ain’t got shit better to do.” First-time violators of ordinance 12-3043 face a fine of up to $150. Repeat offenders could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 days in jail.”

DEEP SLEEP IS A SHOP THAT THROWS PUNK SHOWS IN PHILADELPHIA AND WILL BE CARRYING ACTUAL PAIN THIS FALL. WHEN WE LEARNED THAT THEY NAMED THEIR SHOP AFTER A POISON IDEA SONG, HOSTED A SEX/VID SHOW, AND WANTED TO CARRY OUR BRAND WE WERE LIKE, THANK YOU… HERE IS A BRIEF INTERVIEW WITH PHILLIP LEONE OF DEEP SLEEP
AP: When did DEEP SLEEP open it’s doors? What made you want to open this type of boutique?
PHILLIP LEONE: DEEP SLEEP opened on Black Friday of 2006. For years I’ve wanted to run my own business, though i know very little about business, I didn’t care and still don’t care. I apply the DIY ethics I’ve learned from growing up in the Hardcore scene and apply it to my life in every aspect and this shop is no exception. Maybe it will succeed and maybe it will fail. Either way we are having a great time and aren’t compromising our beliefs.
AP: You guys throw punk and heavy shows at the shop, anything good coming up? Also, since you obviously like good music, is there anything you can’t get enough of right now?
PHILLIP LEONE: When I was 19 I used to book shows in my dad’s auto garage (Dillinger Escape Plan still talk about it in interviews). So when I got this building I knew it wouldn’t be long before I was doing it again. We are currently working out shows for the fall with: HUMAN PEOPLE (x-KING GOD), the NEW LOWS, RUINER, and COLD WORLD. We have had the cops called a couple times, but I can talk my way out of anything, and some old ladies threatened to call L&I which would be real bad since they can just shut our doors completely. So we need to be careful and only are booking bands we are super siked on. I just turned 31 years old and I still really only listen to metal, rock and hardcore. TRAPPED UNDER ICE “stay cold” is my favorite hardcore record of the year. I’ve also been listening to: the Mongoloids, Cold World, Jay Reatard, Oasis, Dissection, Obituary, Carcass, Cradle of Filth, 100 Demons, Ceremony, SEX/VID, Fucked Up, Mind Eraser, Integrity, Earth Crisis, Reign Supreme, Night Marchers, Toad Liquor, Zolof the Rock N Roll Destroyer.
AP: What brands do you carry at the moment? Any big plans for 2009?
PHILLIP LEONE: We currently carry: MHI by Maharishi, WeSC, Done to Death, Pegleg NYC, Flying Coffin, Johnny Cupcakes, Wrath Arcane, Hellz Bellz, Married to the Mob, Sugar Cane Jeans, Good Society Jeans, Recon, Call of the Wild. We are picking up: Naked and Famous Jeans, Fred Perry, Actual Pain, Rockett, Fuct and City of Others in the fall. We also sell new and used records but only punk and hardcore bands we like. We live each day as it comes don’t plan out the future like we should, so who the fuck knows what will happen 2009.
